In a little jazz club uptown by Eric Nunnally
Listening to Sarah Vaughan sing “Tenderly”

1st set.

A careless somnolence
Drifting easy on waves of
Romantic daydreams

Wading through the watercolors of my imagination
And mellifluously washing my mind in bohemian beauty
Light with the scent of paradise…

Flower petals were softer, making love to my eyes
Unrushed to see anything more
Than the feelings in my heart…

And my fingertips played invisibly upon thoughts of
Caressing your smooth and delicate skin
And breathing consciously your nearness…

No waterfalls
Just a lily pad drifting in a pond
And a blue dragonfly skimming the brilliant water…

And you, beneath the shade of an orange blossom tree
Reclined upon a blanket I laid for you in the cool grass
A book folded down beside you and a smile for me…

The sound of leaves in the whisper of the breeze
And playful birds chattering in the warm garden air
And the song I long to share…

I will never think about tomorrow
Because today I am in love
And you are the angel I found waiting for me
In a little jazz club uptown…

2nd set.

Where is she, the woman
Who cursed with those same lips
And laughed…

Where is that blue bird, that butterfly
Who blessed that microphone
And melted the hearts
Of musicians and audience…

Where is that siren, that quiet storm
Who sang so beautifully
The way the sunrise colors morning…

The ghost of her enchants me
Sweeping me away down rivers of
Sentimental imaginings…

Liquid dreams of romantic longings
For a place that seems far away
And long ago…

She painted tapestries of fantasies
In smoke filled rooms
Over the sound of tinkling glasses and
Hushed conversation from the back of the room

A boat setting sail
Across a dark sea called Tranquility
A beautiful breeze
Carrying all our dreams to a place they could breathe
An oasis of melody
In the heart of the hustle of life

Our soothsayer
And heart’s prayer
Heaven on earth
In a little jazz club uptown…
